Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about navigating Coursebook, Husky Chat, and how we handle your data.

What is Coursebook?
Coursebook is an independent course-discovery platform for Northeastern University. It surfaces official course evaluations — SET ratings and student comments — through AI-powered summaries, dimensional analysis, an AI chat assistant, and an agent-powered semester planner.
Who can use it?
Coursebook is built for Northeastern University students and faculty. Personalized features (saving courses, planning, and chat memory) require a university-associated email.
Is it free?
Yes, entirely. Coursebook is a community project built to make course selection at NEU a little easier for everyone.
What is Husky Chat, and how do I use it?
Husky Chat is our AI assistant — its name is Paws. Ask it to compare courses, explain a professor's teaching style, recommend courses for your interests, or help plan a semester. Open the Chat page to start. It runs on Google Gemini by default and may use other large-language-model providers (such as OpenAI or Anthropic) behind the scenes.
Does Husky remember my conversations?
Your on-screen chat transcript lives only in your browser tab — it survives refreshes and navigation, and clears when you close the tab. Separately, we keep a server-side log of chat turns tied to your account for safety, debugging, and quality (see the Privacy Policy). If you want Husky to remember something across sessions, that's what Memory Notes are for.
What are Memory Notes, and how do I manage them?
Memory Notes are short notes about your preferences, interests, and goals. Husky writes them automatically as you chat and reads them to personalize its advice. You can review, edit, or delete any of them anytime on your My Coursebook page.
What is Guest Mode?
Guest Mode is a toggle in the chat interface that temporarily stops Husky from reading or writing your Memory Notes — handy for a one-off question you don't want shaping your long-term profile. Note that chat turns are still logged server-side for safety; Guest Mode only affects Memory Notes.
What are Seat Watch alerts?
When a section is full, you can watch it from its course page. The moment a seat opens, Coursebook notifies you in-app — and by email if you opted in. Manage your watches on My Coursebook.
Where does the course data come from?
Data is sourced from historical Eval25 SET reports and processed as part of an independent research project. We are not officially affiliated with Northeastern University's administration.
How accurate are the AI summaries?
AI summaries are generated by large-language models from student comments. They're great at surfacing themes, but treat them as a starting point for your own research — not a definitive source of truth.
Is my data safe?
We don't use Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or any third-party tracking pixels. Your email is used for sign-in and, if you opt in, seat-availability alerts. Your notes and bookmarks are protected by Supabase Row-Level Security, and raw student comments never reach the browser. We do keep server-side logs of chat turns and key account actions — see the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
How do I contact you?
